They say you learn something new everyday. But you already knew that, right? Here on the tips page you will find helpful information on fishing, as well as links to several other websites that I have found interesting or informative. There is alot of information out there for people who want to expand their knowledge, the trick is to find that knowledge and put it to good use.
Lake trout will give you a good fight. The largest one ever caught was 102 pounds, and was pulled out of Lake Athabasca in Saskatchewan. They typically spend thier entire lives in lakes, but have been known to wander down rivers. These fish are most active in the spring after the ice breaks. When they spwan, September to November, females will release about 10,000 to 20,000 eggs. They typically spawn every one to two years.
Lake trout like tempuratures of about 40-52 degrees F. Strategy for fishing changes throughout the season. In spring you can find them near the surface looking for food. Mid-spring they begin to go lower, and can be found at30-50 feet. During the summer they move down even further to 50-100 feet. Try to catch one by trolling with a larger spoon.
Another good fish that can give you one heck of a fight. Northern Pike usually eat other fish, and they're good at it! if you have one on your line (and it's big enough) you will know because they like to twist and turn like crazy. Pike like weeds and sheltered habitats. So if you want to find one, go to where its hiding! They like to ambush thier prey, so don't be sursprised when one tries to take your rod from you!
Salmon are divided into two groups: Atlantic and Pacific. Atlantic salmon can jump as high as 12 feet. They travel upstream May to July, at a pace of about 4 miles per day. Once they reach spawning ground, the female will lay about 20,00 eggs. Then the adults float down the river, back to the ocean.
Pacific Salmon, also called "King Salmon," will spawn only once. They travel 1500 miles upstream every summer to lay thier eggs, and then fertilize them. After that the adults die, as thier cycle comes to an end. After about two months, the Salmon eggs hatch and the young begin making thier way back to the ocean.
Although not yet comprehensive, my "Fish and Lakes" chart provides some information on lakes, and which fish can be found in them:
